Connecting Alumni to Students: (PC36) Makyla's Blog
November, 2009

The “goodbyes,” the plane trip, watching Canada pass beneath me; lakes, prairies, hills, mountain peaks, the Pacific Ocean… Driving up Pearson College Drive for the first time and hearing “welcome to Pearson.” Not being able to get out of the van because there were so many second years crowding around, hugging and kissing us and welcoming us to this wonderful place! Meeting my roommates, my wonderful Buddy and all the other amazing people whom I would soon know so well. These were my first impressions of Pearson.
My name is Makyla, I’m from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, but now I live in Calgary Home, Room 6 at Pearson College! I was home schooled from grade 1 through grade 8 following the Waldorf philosophy on education before attending my local high school. And now I’m here, at Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific!
From the moment I got the phone call offering me the opportunity to go to British Columbia to study and live in a community in the beautiful Vancouver Island forests, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean with youth from over 100 countries at a school whose goal was to promote peace through education…well how could I not be over the moon with excitement?
Having now lived here for two months, Pearson has lived up to and surpassed all my expectations. The community is incredibly open, my classes are challenging and stimulating, the college itself is stunning, the people are amazing…I could go on and on! And the experiences! So many new experiences! It boggles my mind.
Perhaps
- The long, in depth conversations about anything and everything, with people I’ve never talked to before.
- Exploring the woods around the campus
- Singing Bob Marley’s “One Love” in a choir of over 50 Pearsonites at the Metchosin Day festivities
- Celebrating North American Regional Day!!! Our show had everything from the Arrogant Worms to “Thriller” to Beyonce to poetry to our finale, a “Grease” dance!
- Successfully walking the tightrope in the ropes course without help
- My classes: Theater, Theory of Knowledge, Marine Science, French, Math, English, and Philosophy
- My activities: Scuba Diving, International Dance, and Special Needs music
- Attending Free the Children’s Me2We Day in Vancouver along with 60 000 other youth and children. What an inspirational, surreal experience. We saw the Dalai Lama speak, Jane Goodall, Mark and Craig Kielburger, a former child soldier shared his story, K’naan, the Canadian Tenors and Jason Mraz each performed…and so many more!
- Performing in two of the second year theater students’ Independent Projects (a play that they write/adapt, direct, produce, design…)
- The spontaneity of life here. Because everything is on campus, you can decide to do something and just do it, right then! No need to wait because nothing is more than a two minutes walk away!
- Those moments when the mist still floats over the bay, turning the boats into ghost ships and the mountain peaks are just visible above the clouds. Or when I look out from Observatory across the bay, over the treetops to the distant Olympic Mountains, ruling the surrounding lands. Those moments when one small remark sparks an hours long philosophical discussion. Those moments when I am reminded of how lucky and privileged I am to be here, living in this community.
I hope that I have brought back memories of your years at Pearson, or if you are not a former student, given you a taste of what life at Pearson College entails. This blog will be a chronicle of my time here, the ups, the downs, the friendships, the experiences and the challenges. I hope you will join me as I ride the rollercoaster that is the life of a Person College student.
